Who we are

This policy covers the app and this website. We're the company responsible for your data.

1.1[Memorylane, Inc.] (“Memorylane”, “we”) runs the Memorylane iPhone app and website (the “Service”). We're the “controller” or “business” responsible for the personal information described here. Our contact details are in section 18.

1.2This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights you have. Section 6 is our notice to parents about children under 13. If you're a teen, section 7 is written for you.

2

What we collect

Only what we need to turn your notes into questions and bring them back on time.

What you give us

WhatExamplesWhen
AccountName, email address, password (stored by our sign-in provider, never by us in plain text)When you sign up
Study materialPhotos of notes or whiteboards, PDFs, typed text, files and images you attach to a chatWhen you add them
Tutor conversationsMessages you type; what you say on a voice call, as a written transcriptWhen you chat or call
Study plansTest dates, guide and course names, reminder timesWhen you set them
Family detailsA child's first name and age range; a parent's consent and sharing choices; cheersWhen a parent sets up Family
Messages to usSupport emails and anything you includeWhen you contact us

What's created as you study

The guides, questions and answers made from your material; text we read from your pages; your answers and how you rated them (“Missed it”, “Knew it”); what's due and when; what you know and your weak spots; study time and sessions.

What we collect automatically

Your device's time zone, so cards come back on your day; basic technical information such as app version, device type, operating system, IP address and error logs, to run and secure the Service. We don't use advertising identifiers, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.

What we get from others

From Apple: whether you have an active subscription, and, if you share it, an age range from Apple's age-range feature. From a parent: a child's name and age range when the parent adds them to Family.

Phone permissions

The app asks before using your camera (photos of notes, scanning a family code), photo library, microphone (voice calls) and notifications (review reminders). You can say no and still use the rest of the app.

3

How we use it

To run Memorylane for you, keep it safe, and make it better. Never for ads.

  • Read your material and write flashcards, multiple choice and true or false questions from it.
  • Schedule each card so it comes back when it's due, and sooner when a test is coming.
  • Answer your questions in chat and on voice calls, citing the pages they came from.
  • Show a parent on your Family plan what your age and sharing settings allow, and send the weekly digest and cheers.
  • Send reminders you've turned on.
  • Manage your subscription and answer support requests.
  • Keep the Service secure, prevent fraud and abuse, and enforce our Terms.
  • Understand, in aggregate, how features are used so we can fix and improve them.
  • Meet our legal obligations.

We don't use your information for advertising, we don't build advertising profiles, and we don't make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects based only on automated processing.

4

AI processing

AI providers process your notes only to answer you. They can't train on them.

4.1Memorylane uses AI service providers to read your pages, write your questions, run the chat tutor and power voice calls. For each request, we send them only the parts of your material, conversation or voice needed to do it.

4.2We ask first. The app asks your permission before AI processes your content for the first time. You can withdraw it any time in Settings › Privacy. For a child under 13, the parent gives this permission as part of family consent.

4.3No training. We don't use your content, chats or voice to train AI models, and our contracts don't allow our AI providers to do so. Providers process the data only on our instructions and must protect it at least as well as we do.

4.4Voice. During a voice call, your audio is streamed to our voice provider so the tutor can hear and answer you. We don't store the recording. We keep a written transcript of the call with your chats.

4.5People. Memorylane staff don't read your material or conversations, except when you ask us for help with them, when we need to investigate abuse or a security problem, or when the law requires it.

5

Family, and what parents see

A parent sees a kid's learning. From 13, the kid decides what else is shared.

5.1On a Family plan, the parent who runs it can see some of each child's study activity. How much depends on the child's age and, from 13, on the child's own choices in the app:

A parent seesUnder 1313 to 1516 and 17
Progress and study timeAlwaysAlwaysAlways

5.2Test dates a parent sets, guides a parent makes for a child, quiz answers from a parent's “dinner quiz” and cheers are shared between that parent and child. Children on the same plan don't see each other's activity.

5.3The weekly digest summarises each child's week for the parent, within the same limits as the table above.

6

Children under 13

Kids under 13 join only after a parent agrees. The parent can see, change or delete it all.

6.1Notice to parents. This section is our notice under the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Children under 13 can't create their own Memorylane account. They use Memorylane only through a managed profile that a parent or legal guardian creates on a Family plan.

6.2How a parent consents. Before a child's profile works, the parent reads this notice in the app, confirms they're the child's parent or guardian, and agrees [plus a verification step: see note]. Only then does the app create the code the child uses to join. Nothing is saved for the child until the parent agrees.

6.3What we collect from a child. The child's first name and age range (from the parent); the study material the child adds; the child's chats with the tutor and voice call transcripts; and their study activity, as described in section 2. We don't ask a child for an email address, phone number, photo of themselves or location, and we don't let children make their profile public or message other users.

6.4How we use it. Only to provide Memorylane to the child: making guides and questions, scheduling reviews, the tutor, and showing the parent what section 5 allows. The tutor gives hints before answers for children. We never use a child's information for advertising, and we never sell or rent it.

6.5Who we share it with. Only the service providers that run Memorylane for us (section 9), under contracts that limit their use to providing the Service; the parent, as section 5 describes; and authorities where the law requires. A parent can agree to Memorylane collecting and using a child's information without agreeing to any other disclosure.

6.6How long we keep it. We keep a child's information only while the child's profile is active, and delete it within [30] days after the profile is deleted or the parent withdraws consent. We keep a minimal record of the consent itself for [3 years] to show we obtained it.

6.7A parent's rights. A parent can at any time review the child's information, have it corrected or deleted, and withdraw consent to further collection, in Settings › Family or by emailing [privacy@memorylane.app]. Withdrawing consent deletes the child's profile.

6.8If you think a child under 13 gave us information without a parent's consent, email us and we'll delete it.

7

Teens

If you're 13 to 17, you choose what your parent sees. Your settings start private.

7.1If you're 13 or older and on a parent's Family plan, you control what's shared beyond your progress, as the table in section 5 shows. Sharing settings start at the most private option. Your parent can't turn them on for you.

7.2We don't show ads, profile you for marketing, or use “nudges” to make you share more or study longer than you choose. You can ask us to delete your information at any time, as section 11 describes.

8

Sharing guides

A shared guide is a copy. What the other person does with it stays on their phone.

8.1When you share a guide by link, QR code or code, the recipient gets the guide's title, questions and answers. It doesn't include your progress, chats or source files.

8.2A recipient without an account studies the copy on their phone, and their answers stay on that phone. We don't collect a name or email from them, and we don't show their activity to you.

8.3If a recipient says they're under 13, the app asks a grown-up to approve on that phone first. That experience has no AI tutor and doesn't send their answers to us.

9

Who we share with

Only the companies that run Memorylane for us, your family, and Apple. We don't sell data.

9.1We share personal information only in these cases:

  • Service providers that work for us under contract: cloud hosting and storage, sign-in and account security, AI processing for text, documents, search and voice, and email. They may use the information only to provide services to us.
  • Your family, on a Family plan, as section 5 describes, and people you share a guide with, as section 8 describes.
  • Apple, which handles purchases under its own privacy policy.
  • The law and safety: when we believe in good faith it's needed to comply with law or legal process, protect someone's safety, or investigate fraud or abuse.
  • A business change: if Memorylane is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, under this policy's protections. We'll tell you before your information becomes subject to a different policy.
  • With your permission, in any other case.

9.2We don't sell personal information, and we don't “share” it for cross-context behavioural advertising, as those terms are defined under California law. We haven't done so in the last 12 months.

9.3A current list of our service providers is available at [memorylane.app/subprocessors] or on request.

10

11

Deleting your data

Delete a chat, a guide or your whole account from the app.

11.1Delete a chat in Chat options › Delete and a guide from its menu. Delete your account in Settings › Account › Delete account.

11.2Deleting your account starts straight away. It removes your account, material, guides, chats, transcripts and study history from our systems and from the phone, and finishes within [30] days. Copies in backups and our providers' logs expire on the schedule in section 10. We keep a minimal record that the account existed and was deleted, and records we must keep by law, such as purchase records.

11.3If you run a Family plan, deleting your account also deletes every child account linked to it. Deleting a child's profile removes the child's information; the parent's household records stay until the parent deletes the household.

11.4Deleting your account doesn't cancel your Apple subscription. Cancel it first in Settings › Account › Manage subscription.

12

Your choices and rights

You can see, fix, download or delete your information. Just ask.

12.1Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we have about you and give you a copy, in a portable format;
  • correct information that's wrong;
  • delete your information;
  • stop processing it with AI, or withdraw any other permission you gave.

12.2Email [privacy@memorylane.app] from your account email. We'll confirm who you are before acting, and answer within 30 days, or sooner if the law requires. You can use an authorised agent where the law allows. We won't treat you differently for using your rights.

12.3You can also turn off reminders in Settings › Review reminder, and turn camera, photo, microphone or notification access off in your iPhone's Settings.

12.4If we deny your request, you can appeal by replying to our answer. If you're unhappy with the outcome, you can contact your state attorney general or your data protection authority.

13

U.S. state privacy rights

California and many other states give you extra rights. Here's what they ask us to say.

13.1If you live in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia or another state with a consumer privacy law, you have the rights in section 12, as those laws provide. In the past 12 months, we collected these categories of personal information, for the purposes in section 3:

13.2We use sensitive personal information only to provide the Service and as the law permits, not to infer characteristics about you. Because we don't sell or share personal information, there's nothing to opt out of; we also honour Global Privacy Control signals as an opt-out request. California residents may also ask about disclosures for direct marketing under the “Shine the Light” law; we make none.

14

Where your data goes

Your data is stored in the United States and may be processed elsewhere, with protections.

14.1We and our providers process information in the United States and [other countries], under contracts that require the same protection described in this policy.

15

Security

We protect your data carefully. No system is perfect, and we'll tell you if something goes wrong.

15.1We encrypt data in transit and at rest, limit access to the people and systems that need it, and keep a written information-security programme, including for children's information. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your information, we'll notify you and the authorities as the law requires.

16

This website and cookies

This website uses no advertising or tracking cookies.

16.1Our website uses only what's strictly needed to load pages and keep them secure. We don't use advertising, social-media or cross-site tracking cookies or pixels. If we add privacy-friendly analytics, we'll list them here first. Our servers log basic request data, such as IP address and browser type, for security, and delete it within [30] days.

17

Schools and changes

Memorylane is for students and families, not run by schools. We'll tell you before big changes.

17.1Schools. Memorylane is a consumer service that students and families choose for themselves. We don't contract with schools or receive student records from them. If a school wants to use Memorylane, contact us first so the right agreements are in place.

17.2Changes. If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app or by email before the change applies, and, where the law requires, ask for your consent again, including a parent's consent for a child. The effective date at the top shows when it last changed.
